Are Christians allowed to get a divorce?
The answer is found in the Bible
In the beginning, God created marriage. This is why a "man will leave his father and
mother and is join to his wife, and the two are united into one." Genesis 2:24. At the
same time, Adam and Eve were naked but they felt no shame. Genesis 2:25. That's
because there was no sin in them. Subsequently, Adam and Eve sinned against God
by eating the forbidden fruit. Due to this disobedience to God, humans began to
recognized between right and wrong. At that moment, the Holy union between a man
and a woman spoken about in Genesis 2:24 was lost forever. God's intention of
keeping the union forever is still the same today. We as human beings have made
ourselves "unholy or unworthy" by our actions. We have married for the wrong reasons,
committed adultery, and allowed ourselves to give into lustful temptations, and not
love. This is not the Holy union that God intended for us to have.
God's people were allowed to give letters of divorce if they discovered that something
about their partner was shameful. Deuteronomy 24:1. However, God still hates divorce,
but does not condemn it. Malachi 2:16. If your marriage has become insupportable,
because of unfaithfulness, you are certainly permitted to get a divorce. Matthew 5:32.
The New Testament is clear on this. "A Christian wife brings holiness to her marriage,
and a Christian husband brings holiness to his marriage. But if the husband or wife
who isn't a Christian insist on leaving, let them go. In such cases the Christian husband
or wife is not required to stay with them, for God wants his children to live in peace." 1
Corinthians 7: 14-15. Do not let others judge you on your decision to live for God.
Matthew 7:1 So the person who marries does well, and the person who doesn't marry
does even better. 1 Corinthians 7:38.
If your spouse has committed adultery against you, or if your spouse does not want to
be with you anymore, you are not required to be with them and you can get a divorce.
This site was created for people like you, Christians, who may be facing a relationship
which has become unholy. God wants your union to be holy, but if the devil has
overtaken the sanctity of marriage, then God has allowed you to be free for Him. We
encourage all believers to read 1 Corinthians 7, so that the Holy Spirit may guide you
in finding the answers you seek.
